1951 - Pre is born on January 25 in Coos Bay, Oregon 1970 - Despite a foot injury and stitches, Pre wins the NCAA 3-mile in a record time of 13:22.0 1972 - At the Munich Olympics, Pre fails to win a medal in the 5000 meter event. He finishes in fourth place after Ian Stewart of Great Britain passes him in the last few yards 1973-1974 - Pre sets American records in 2 miles, 3 miles, 6 miles, 2000 meters, 5000 meters, and 10,000 meters1975 - Steve Prefontaine dies in a car accident on May 30 at the age of 24 1991 - Pre is elected to the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame
